Dutch singer and artist Herman Brood, who had been in contact with U2 since 1997, committed suicide this week.

Brood, 54, had a note on him that said: 'Party on, we might meet again.'

According to the Dutch website U2log.com, Brood met U2 in 1997, when the band were in Holland to play at the MTV awards. "He entertained the band in Cafe Dante in Amsterdam and showed Bono his paintings. Bono then sang a chorus of Brel's Port of Amsterdam at the awards, to celebrate Brood's birthday."

They were both friends with Anton Corbijn, U2's longtime photographer.

I wasn't a friend of Herman, I was a fan. said Bono. I'd been to his studio, I'd been out for a walk with him on his birthday. He took me to some of his old haunts. "He asked me about the Bible. I thought he was taking the piss. What else is there to talk about, only God, he scolded me. Very few artists are as vivid as their imaginations. I'll miss him because I didn't know him better."
