Best of... the Noughties?

31 December 2009

It's December 31st 2009, the end of a decade which saw the band release three studio albums.

The 'noughties' for U2 started with All That You Can't Leave Behind in 2000, then came How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb in 2004 and this year came No Line on The Horizon.

Was it a single release that became a global hit or an obscure album track that you think most people still haven't discovered?

Was it a track they've yet to play live or a song that no live show can now be complete without?

Was it something they wrote which doesn't feature on one of the three studio albums? (There's a handful of tracks like this... when you come to think of it.)

Your call. Tell us what was the ONE greatest piece of work the band created during the last decade... and in a couple of sentences tell us why.

ELEVATION Tomb Raider mix and VERTIGO are definately up there ,Rockin`Roll at its best .But Stuck In A Momment ,Sometimes ``` and Momment of surrender probably hit the spot more as classic songs especially as two of them where writen as tributes, the there`s Kite aswell.......remains undecieded I guess, they`ll have try four albums next decade...;-)

Electrical Storm
There's amazing songs from this decade...for me the best decade of their career......and I think the one taking the most space in my heart is electrical storm....it's such an amazing song...I was in the process o becoming a U2 fan when it came out.....it makes you feel every last note in it.......and the ugly part about it all is taht it's only been played 3 times live in the 8 years it has existed..........so PLEASE....start playing it more often

In A Little While
A song rather unknown to the generel public, but what a great song it is! They've played it at the Rosebowl this year and truly hope they play it in Brussels next year! "A man dreams one day to fly..."

Moment of Surrender
There have been many great songs during this decade, Beatiful Day was my favourite till this year, but Moment of Surrender is the one just now, pure magic put into a Cd, it's not only the music, it touches me every time I listen to it.

Is a very beautiful song....

They were all GREAT but......
Magnificent and Love and Peace Or Else have to get the top honors. The reason I can't pick one or the other is I keep listening to them back to back and then, oh yeah there's Original Of The Species(if you have children this becomes a staple), Don't forget Yahweh! You can never rule out City of Blinding Lights, and how can you forget Grace! Maybe that's it, Grace! I found Grace and that's NOT all I found!! Oh yes that reminds of Breathe, oh wait I know Walk On! Or When I Look At The World, has this been truly only one decade??

Walk On
An incredible song that sums up everything I love about U2. Spiritual, political, a stirring call to arms which is also a beautiful piece of music that particularly when performed live lifts you out of everyday human experience. It's one of those almost mystical moments that U2 are so good at creating.

It's a tie
For me it's MAGNIFICENT and MOMENT OF SURRENDER. I had tears in my eyes the first time I heard Magnificent. For me it encompasses the 30 years of undying love and passion I have had, and still have, for these men and their music. The emotion just continues for me when Moment of Surrender plays. This song is full of both tremendous sadness, that of a man coming to terms with the emotional consequences of his past actions, and incredible hope that the man feels when he gives himself up to the possibility of a better life. There is more truth in this song than almost any they have ever written!

WINTER - from the Linear DVD that came with the box set of No line seems to be the favourite in this house at the moment but this changes from week to week - that is the thing for me about U2; so many songs that are mood changing or defining. Why are they only doing Glasto in the UK next year - eveywhere else seems to be getting more dates???
Sturoopa - 31 December, 2009
Unknown Caller
Crumbs from Your Table is a hidden gem. Love You Like Mad from the All You Cant Leave Behind sessions is another. For me the highlight is Unknown Caller and truly came alive during the tour this year

Original of the Species
Wow.. that song simply takes me to a different state of mind. The concept, the lyric, the music, they all simply become a sweet moment in time. I love many other songs, but this one is a song that seems written for me
