Sonic evolution
This great interview allows me to trace back the remarkable metamorphosis of The Fly. It gives me some interesting insights into the fruitful working process of a band who had the will and ambition to find new sounds and textures after Rattle And Hum. Flood helped Bono to achieve this very specific tone colour that had never appeared before Achtung Baby. When hearing The Fly for the first time on the radio I recognised Bono;s voice, but through the distortion it seemed to come from a dark and unknown place. Back then I was very excited to get to know this mysterious new persona of Bono.

wow
what was it bono said? achtung baby was the sound of 4 men chopping down a joshua tree?
to willingly pull away from the success of joshua tree, and take the harder path towards something, 'better' isnt the right word, as is 'groundbreaking'.

Broken speakers
I also thought my speakers were broken!
Excitedly, as is always the case when listening to a U2 release for the first time, I listened to the start of 'Zoo Station.' Moments later I ejected the disc to search for damage or dust or another culprit which could cause that strange sound. Nothing.
Try once again to listen only to repeat the same process. Still nothing as my thoughts turn to the possible need for new speakers. Insert a different CD (who can remember what it might have been) to hear that the stereo system functions normally. Hmmm. Very interesting. What has U2 done this time?
Achtung begins once again and I did not interrupt it this time. I sat and listened with rapt attention from start to finish to what the band had described as the "sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree," and I was stunned (much as I had been after listening to Joshua Tree for the first time). I don't know how many times I listened to AB that day but it was several, and it has been my favorite album ever since.
An all-time classic and an absolute masterpiece!

Distortion
Yep, it's always my first choice at times when "something needs to change" and it gets me up Everest every time. Fantastic. Thanks for the eye-witness account - this is gold dust.
