Friends have stepped in to save U2’s surprise World AIDS Day (RED) performance which was jeopardised by Bono’s November 16 bike accident in Central Park.

Kanye West and Carrie Underwood will perform at the event - tonight at 7.30pm - and Chris Martin and Bruce Springsteen will join U2 Minus 1, as the singer remains under doctors' orders to refrain from performing until fully recuperated from his injuries.

The World AIDS Day event in Times Square will begin promptly at 7.30pm and feature performances from special guests Kanye West and Carrie Underwood.

Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. will be joined by Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, each of whom will take a turn as frontman on the U2 songs. Appearing at the personal invitation of U2, Springsteen and Martin have graciously donated their time and talents to save the World AIDS Day event from cancellation.

"This year is a World AIDS Day like no other," said Bono, speaking from Dublin. "The world reached a tipping point in the fight against AIDS - more people were newly added to life-saving treatment than were newly infected with the virus. A lot of people are calling it the beginning of the end of AIDS.
"We wouldn’t be at this point without American leadership, people from the left and the right.  Today, 13 million people have access to life-saving treatment, up from 300,000 just over ten years ago.  Americans don’t know the role they’ve played in this fight.  Tonight’s event is to inform them and thank them.”

A (RED) Thank you Presented by will be broadcast live on YouTube, radio across the US including iHeart Radio which is becoming iHeart (RED) for World AIDS Day and as part of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown.

The event starts at 7.30pm EST at Duffy Square in Times Square, on Broadway between 46th & 47th Streets. Attendees should enter at 50th Street and Broadway.

Gorgeous and Classy
Our boys were gorgeous and classy ... minus 1. It's obvious ... there is only one Bono. However, Bruce and Chris were kind to step in and lend a hand...and Larry, Edge, and Adam gave their full support. Total Class Act, our Irish boys are. Mend well, are loved and missed. <3 <3 <3

Get well soon Bono
I enjoyed the show in Times Square last night!!! Upset I couldn't make it, but I want to thank you guys Larry, Adam and The Edge, for still going on and representing a good cause without Bono. You guys rock!! Bruce and Chris did great but it just wasn't the same without Bono. The energy he brings when all 4 of you are together is out of this world. The chemistry you guys have on stage can't be replaced. Get well soon Bono! You're truly missed!!! #U2ROCKSFOREVER

Incomplete DNA
Each band has it's own DNA I believe. In case of U2, the band's DNA consists out of Larry, Adam, Edge and Bono. Now Bono is recovering from it's injuries, I think it's great that other great artists sing the songs. But, and I'm sorry if I offend anybody, the performance with Chris Martin just didn't feel right to me. He is a great singer, but he is part of Coldplay's DNA. I just missed Bono's raw and loud voice, and the eager he puts in the songs. Thanks to mr. Martin anyway, for doing his part in the show.

Not the same without you...
Get well soon Bono, U2 without Bono is like a table with three legs, your absence shows what a hole you leave but the band sounded brilliant that was the saving grace. Edge would have made a great lead but great to see Chris and Bruce help you out, it was all in the name of a great cause which I am sure is the reason you let the show go on without are truly awesome in a billion ways!

Shades of ZOO TV?
Did anyone else get a ZooTV vibe seeing the ads going on behind the band?

Today is an amazing date!
I believe that today is the first time that U2 play without an one member from the original band formation (probably since then 1978). Today, could be considered a mark, a milestone of this incredible band which put rock and roll beyond any facts or circumstances, prioritizing music, people and dreams. U2 is a legend!

U2 + 2
Bruce and Chris channel Bono - in their own special way. The spirit was there in full force. This was U2 + 2 at its best. Thanks for the awesome concert. Mend well, Bono!
