Alligators and Jellyfish

Alligators and Jellyfish
Friday 16th October 2009. Cancun. Day off.

There's nothing quite like waking up in a Mangrove swamp on the Yucatan Peninsular. Especially on a Friday. At breakfast, Sharon was a little wigged out at having spotted an alligator outside her room. She has the 'end terrace', so her balcony and jetty are immediately adjacent to the heart of the swamp and apparently a substantial alligator has taken up residence next door.

I spent much of the day in my cottage working away. Highlight of the afternoon was discovering another bathroom to go with the two I'd already got. I opened what I thought was a sliding wardrobe door only to find another whole place behind it. You can't have too many bathrooms, I always say, especially one with its own outdoor courtyard and a bath that could comfortably accommodate Sharon's alligator.

Smasher's been working non-stop but finally managed to take an hour off this afternoon so headed to the beach which is a five-minute golf cart ride away. He dived into the ocean and was immediately stung by a jellyfish. I'd say that’s the last time he'll leave his bungalow before we head out of here.

Wrapped up the day with another productive evening meeting on Bono Island, followed by a late beer with a side of mosquito spray.

An alligator!?
If I had a home around which were alligators or crocodiles, I'd bloody move! Aren't jellyfish poisonous, too?! You have guts, bub. By the way, thank U2 for playing Your Blue Room, Unforgettable Fire, and Ultraviolet in Toronto. As Bono said in 1992, "Screw the pop kids. We don't need 'em." Setlists shouldn't be overloaded with hits when there are so many great obscure songs.

Nasty Jellyfish
Always take Adolph's Meat Tenderizer to the beach! Apply a paste to stung areas. It helps a lot. Urine is supposed to work also--haven't tried that!

Totally agree!
Oh to have an alligator outside my office! It would certainly be more exciting than looking into the eyes of another corporate drone...

Same here
I love reading your thoughts and experiences. Don't forget there are tens of thousands of us out here trapped in grey-walled cubicles 9 hours/day that NEED things like your Diary for better mental well-being.

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
