Anaheim Pond I

Anaheim Pond I
The day began with an e-mail from Bono with a plan to bomb the set-list out of recognition. Once I had established that this was not an April Fools joke, I was well up for it as I would hope this is going to be a tour where we can experiment and take some chances. Besides, it's good to keep the punters guessing.

Down to the venue, where my trusty 'TV-B-Gone' successfully zapped all four TV's in the catering room. Much running around to cater for the new set list, but all was in pretty good shape by the time the band arrived. Soundcheck turned into another rehearsal, to at least have one run-through of the more eccentric parts of the set.

It was quite a show. After the low ceilings of L.A. and San Diego Sports Arenas, this venue feels vast, the crowd enormous and so, of course, everything looks vastly better. The set list was a wild ride, launching into Love and Peace, Sunday and Bullet then barely taking a breath for two hours. Parts of it were wonderful, parts were barely controlled chaos, but it was great fun even if we did baffle the audience periodically. Nice to hear Mysterious Ways. Very loud crowd. Bono invited the audience to take out their cell phones during the One Campaign moment, producing a galaxy of tiny lit-up screens all over the building. This used to be done with cigarette lighters, but the electronic version was quite magical. It really looked beautiful. After the show there was a barbecue in the backstage loading-dock, which was unexpected and fun. It's the birthday of one of our truck drivers, ìTexî, so a good excuse to have a spontaneous social event. The other drivers had flown his daughter in as a surprise, which was really sweet. I stayed for an hour or so then jumped in a van bound for the hotel, wondering what the set list holds for tomorrow
