Day Off - Berlin

I managed to take a walk round the area close to our hotel and came across "Checkpoint Charlie", one of the former border crossings allowing access between East and West Berlin. They have kept it as a souvenir and built a human rights museum around it. I remember going through here in the winter of 1979 or thereabouts. I spent a week or so here with a London club band called "Writz" and we had a high old time. The band's front-man and I decided that we both looked so unlike our passport photos that we should see if we could get into East Germany using each other's passports (yes, we must have been absolutely out of our minds). As it happened, we got away with it, but I can't imagine what we were thinking. It was very strange and quite moving to be back here now, in the sunshine seeing this place overrun with tourists and t-shirt shops. Its not all bad, after all. Everything's in colour now too, when it was all black & white back then.

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
