Day Off - Dublin

Day off in Dublin? Absolutely. It occurs to me that despite coming here so many times over so many years I've very rarely had a real day off here. When I'm in Dublin during the design & pre-production periods of a tour I've always got a mountain of things to get together and if I'm here prior to a U2 show there's never a spare moment. Today though was a little oasis, with the added psychological bonus of being a Sunday. I slept late then went down to the Tea Room at the Clarence Hotel for a very major breakfast. Did the whole bit - porridge, kippers, the lot - they've really got breakfast down. I took about two hours over it, reading the blanket rave reviews of the gig last night. 'The Best Gig in the World, Ever' screamed one headline. I guess they liked it.

Finished breakfast and went back to bed. I was just wiped. Got up again about 3 had a bath till about 5, by which time I was starting to feel able to face the world. Some friends came by the hotel and I managed to summon up enough energy to order afternoon tea in the library. I have to admit to loving this indulgence and complete lack of activity. I think its known as 'relaxation' - I've read about it in magazines in dentists' waiting rooms & am keen to try more.

We went for a walk across St. Stephen's Green as the sun set, then unexpectedly ended up going to see 'Planet of the Apes'. I haven't been to the pictures in as long as I can remember and this was a big old Dublin theatre with a large auditorium, so doubly nice. The film was incredibly stupid and almost entirely plot-free (essentially just a two hour long fight scene) but the make up alone is worth the price of admission. Michael Clarke Duncan is absolutely terrifying, ranting and jumping up and down in his ape get up. Mind you at 6' 10', or whatever he is, I imagine he'd be equally terrifying ranting and jumping up and down in his street clothes.

Bed early. Great day.
