Day off - Los Angeles

Day off - Los Angeles
So we lost Joey Ramone. Bono sang a short tribute to him during the show last night - "I remember you" - though we found out today, according to the New York newspapers, that he was listening to U2's "In A Little While" when he passed away. I have one great mental picture of Joey Ramone. "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" was the sound of me leaving high school, so I was thrilled that The Ramones played with U2 several times over the years. On one occasion (I think it was Zoo TV outdoors) we were all in Paris. I was checking in to the hotel - the Holiday Inn at Place de la Republique - and at the counter was Joey Ramone. What a magnificent sight he was too, a vision in black; long black hair, black shades, black leather jacket, black pointy boots, so very thin & far too tall, with skin the whitest shade of pale - anything more incongruous amid chic Parisian surroundings is hard to imagine. And what was he doing? Complaining to the receptionist that the hotel didn"t have a health club. The mind boggles, but then again the boggling of minds was always The Ramones forte.

Otherwise it was a pretty leisurely day. I had some video tapes to pick up and look through - new footage for the show which had just come in from Catherine Owens in London. Not too much else going on. I did find a copy of yesterday's "Observer" up at Book Soup, precious treasure indeed, so that kept me out of trouble for a couple of hours. In the evening I headed out for food with Amanda and also Karen from the wardrobe dept.. It was getting late and places were closing, so we ended up at Barney's Beanery - a regular U2 hang out on The Joshua Tree tour. In those days it was quite the scene - lots of pool tables, good juke box, cool crowd - I seem to remember Mickey Rourke & various biker escapades. Well, let me tell you, its all over now... Most of the pool tables have gone and worse still they have taken up karaoke three nights a week. Sadly tonight was one of them and it was so loud and so awful that try as we might, we just couldn't survive longer than five minutes. It was that second rendition of "I was born a ramblin" man...". We fled.
