'Dissenting Surrealism'

'Dissenting Surrealism'
Sydney.  Day off.

Happily am much recovered this morning.  At least I feel vastly better, even if my allergy-freaked eyes are slower to sort themselves out than I€™d like.  However, all heading in the right direction.

Smasher came over for breakfast at the Museum of Sydney Cafe which is just up the street from my lavish new digs.  All was blue skies and poached eggs, so not difficult to feel good about life.  We had a manageable amount of work to get done this afternoon, which we got stuck into once we€™d eaten.  The idea was to make some video inserts for Miss Sarajevo, to remind the audience what the song is about and give it a greater resonance.  It works well at present but many people probably don't get beyond it just being a showcase for Bono€™s operatic moment.  The song was written about the response of a group of Bosnian women to the siege of their city, which was being largely ignored by the outside world.  Amid the chaos and destruction they staged a beauty pageant.  I imagine their individual motivations may have been many and various - to create a reminder of how €˜normal€™ life used to be, a defiant statement that life will carry on, something fun to do, an excuse to glam up and feel beautiful - but  for me the footage of the event comes across as an act of dissenting surrealism. It is defiant, ironic, subversive and not a little crazy.  The song has been around since €™95 and has been performed many times, but we€™ve never used this footage in a live show before.  Even though the footage is specific to Bosnia, the sentiment easy translates to any present-day conflict zone.  It hasn€™t lost any of it€™s power in 15 years.

After three hours of war and destruction, we needed a bit of cheering up so headed down to Circular Quay and got on the Kiribilli Ferry.   This is a half-hour round-trip that takes you over to the other side of the harbour and back.  It€™s a commuter ferry really, but it serves very well as a cheap and cheerful sightseeing jaunt, sailing right by the Opera House & Harbour Bridge.  In defiance of the weather forecast it was a gorgeous afternoon which made being out in the harbour all the more glorious.  All very beautiful, wonderfully calming.

Stroll round the city, dinner with friends & turned in early.  It€™s a school night, after all.

touring in australia
Hey Wills Hope don't mind me calling you Wills Been reading your diary entries over the past few days. I'm glad you've been enjoying yourself on your days off some sightseeing in Sydney and also days earlier back in Melbourne. To you and the band that you'll very much enjoy the rest of your time here in Australia and in particular with the weather while making the most of it before heading home as the weather in your home country is quite bad both in the UK and europe

reworked Miss Sarajevo
I hope that after you rework the video you post it as one of the spotlight videos from a performance. You all passed through Arlington, Tx so I will not get to see it in action (of course you could decide to swing through Austin Tx when you come back stateside :) ) Looking forward to seeing it! Adam Austin, Tx

It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.
