U2360° TOUR Leg 3: 2011

'Doctor In The House'

09 April 2011
'Doctor In The House'
Sao Paulo. Show 1.

There is a standard approach to dealing with illness on the road. For the first three days you completely ignore all symptoms and, whilst feeling quietly sorry for yourself, just carry on. Day four: consume all the random medication you can find in your washbag/suitcase/workbox. Day five: consider stopping drinking alcohol and staying up late. Day six: consume all the random medications you can find in anybody else’s washbag/suitcase/workboxes. Day seven: see the doctor if one shows up at the gig.

I’ve been in possession of two lungs full of goo all week so, being day seven, I finally caved in and asked if there was a doctor in the house. Happily there was, or at least there was a very pleasant Brazilian man who claimed to be a doctor. The only reason I mentally queried this claim was that he didn't have a doctor's bag. Doctor without a bag?  Fireman without a truck? Conductor without a baton? It just seemed odd, especially when he asked to check my breathing and listen to my lungs and, in the absence of a stethoscope he just put his ear to my chest and then to my back. Naturally somebody walked in on us when we were in this pose, so I can only imagine what rumours are now circulating.

The show must go on, of course, illness or no illness, and happily today was relatively straightforward, with a great result.  Morumbi stadium in Sao Paulo may not be the newest stadium on the planet but it is one that really ticks the boxes for a U2 show, especially 360. There is a continuous curve of seating all the way round, not broken up by stairways or angled corners, there is no overhanging roof or glass fronted corporate boxes to play hell with the sound, the seats are packed together giving high crowd density and best of all of course, it is jammed to capacity with Brazilians. The tent city outside the building has apparently been there since before the first U2 tour truck arrived.

I confess I was a little out of it for the show but the energy of the crowd helped get me through it. Early night. Well, 1.30am.
