'Glastonbury Virgins '

20 June 2011
'Glastonbury Virgins '
Arrival, London.

Ethan and I got in to a fine and sunny London some time in the middle of the day and met up with Allen who had also just arrived from the U.S.  We three are team lighting, as Ethan will be running the stage lighting for the U2 performance at Glastonbury, whilst Allen looks after the lighting for the television broadcast. They are both Glastonbury virgins and I’m not sure they quite knew what to make of my insistence that before heading to the festival it was essential to furnish ourselves with “wellies”.  Wellington boots – stout knee-high rubber boots, long the choice of farmers and fly-fishermen – are a must for English festival-going.  It also turned out that their necessity is far from a secret as it seemed for a while that all of the camping shops and department stores of the West End were sold out. We did eventually succeed, also managing to pick up golf umbrellas and snazzy LED flashlights, at which point I felt confident enough to call ourselves prepared.

I had dinner with friends in the evening before sleeping in my own bed (always confusing when you’re on tour).  Tomorrow I head off again for several weeks but it is a weird and wonderful thought that this is the final furlong.  The next time I get back to London, 360 will be all over.

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
