Half of The Clash

Half of The Clash
Sydney.  Day off.

There€™s an Annie Leibovitz show at the MCA in Sydney that I€™ve been meaning to get to and finally managed to do so this morning.  It turned into a bit of an €˜art date€™ with one of my artist friends here.  He€™s a painter, not normally disposed to look upon photography as a serious art form, so he was the perfect sparring partner.  Also in the gallery was a big show by a serious indigenous artist (a subject about which my friend knows a colossal amount) so the two shows formed a very interesting juxtaposition.

The structure of the Leibovitz show was a bit all over the place (according to me) but there were some highlights.  The sub-Ansel Adams giant landscapes should be binned forthwith (according to me), though the portraits of William Burroughs and Eudora Welty were really magical.  It does seem to me though, that her particular gift is the ability to assassinate her subject through flattery.  The Donald Trump portrait is grotesque and utterly damning to any rational eyes, but I bet he thought it was most becoming.  Who knows whether this was her intention but if so, it€™s extremely clever.  Celebrity beware.

Laundry beckoned but, having friends in this town, I at least managed to work this moment of drudgery into a most pleasant social engagement.  A huge storm passed overhead whilst I was there but had entirely disappeared again by the time the last pair of socks was out of the dryer.  The climate gets pretty extreme here from time to time.

Had a bit of a busman€™s holiday in the evening and went to see Gorillaz down at the Entertainment Centre.  I€™ve wanted to see this show for ages so was delighted that our tours finally crossed paths.  It was quite the spectacle, with so many people on stage that I can only begin to imagine what sound checks must be like; large band, half a dozen string players, a Syrian orchestra (why not?!), rappers & singers for days including, amazingly, the actual Bobby Womack.  Oh, and half of The Clash.  All this in an hour and a half - I felt like I€™d been to a festival.  The films are brilliant €“ a fascinating and pleasantly unsettling look into an obsessed mind.  Manga meets Roger Dean - there were some lovely moments.

Couple of beers after in downtown Sydney.  Christmas is coming and the streets are getting packed.

It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.
