'Happy Days in the Hood'

'Happy Days in the Hood'
San Francisco. Day off.

Day-Off-San-Francisco is a very happy combination of words and (pretty much) I managed to forget I was on tour for 24 hours, and have a bit of a civilian social life. That said, there is a certain agony in being here for such a ridiculously brief period of time when there are so many people and places that I would love to catch up with.  I did, however, give it my best shot.

Breakfast at the Cove Café with Harold, opposite the glorious Castro Theater, was followed by a house call to my old friend and neighbour Richard, whom I managed to get out of the shower.

SFMOMA currently has a show called 'The Steins Collect' which I liked the look of and besides I would have gone to SFMOMA anyway.  It was a really interesting show, about Gertrude Stein, her two brothers and her sister in law, who moved to Paris very early in the 20th century and started collecting modern art.  Their two households became the epicentre of the avant-garde art world and the SFMOMA show was at pains to convey how unsettling it would have been for people at the time to see this kind of new, radical art – much akin to the first time you ever saw Damien Hirst’s sliced up cows in an art gallery.  The work looks very familiar to our eyes (lots of Matisse and Picasso) but the story contained within the exhibition was fascinating.  Adam was there, coincidentally, no doubt feeling the need for an art-fix, as I was.
Further to a post-art nap, four of us met at the Slanted Door, a wonderful modern-Vietnamese restaurant now relocated to the Ferry Building with a spectacular view of the bay and the Bay Bridge. From there, inevitably, to the Lone Star, where I’d arranged to meet the lads to give out the tickets and passes to my thousand guests for tomorrow's show. Happy days in the hood.
