'Little Piece of Paradise'

Nice. Day off.

The sunshine returns.  I can't remember what time we got in last night, but I woke pleasantly late and even managed a swim, hang the flags out.

Dec, Smasher and I set up the porta-studio again in the IKEA penthouse and it turned out that Joe. O. was in the next room through the adjoining door.  He was compiling his show CDs so we had quite the 360 Show workshop going on.

The main task for the day was to start working on a new segue to take us from the end of Miss Sarajevo into the questions and on into City of Blinding Lights.  Just as he did with Hold Me, Thrill Me, Dec was trawling through the multi-track recordings of City of Blinding Lights and also the song Zooropa, both of which have a whole host of weird and wonderful things hidden away in the depths.  (My favourite was the sound of a cassette tape recorder being fast-forwarded, which is buried somewhere in the Zooropa master.  We didn't end up using the sound but it was a wonderful little timepiece indicator of when that track was recorded.)

We've ended up with something quite minimal and haunting but I think it could be very beautiful.  It includes some sounds from both songs that Dec has manipulated and also the 'Westminster chime' of a carriage clock.  One of the themes of the show is the passage of time and I'd wondered if a clock sound would be a bit 'on the nose', as U2 would say.  In context though, it has an unexpectedly melancholic feel to it, which is oddly moving.  We'll play it to the band tomorrow to get their take on it and obviously over the P.A. on Thursday to see how it sounds when huge.

The evening saw me escaping from the tour, to the rescheduled rendezvous with my mates in Villefranche.  Coincidentally, their house is right by the palm tree that our cab driver crashed us into last year.  It always feels a little unnerving to go back to the scene of the accident but this seems to be receding as time passes.

They had made a reservation at a favourite beachfront restaurant of theirs, which is pretty fabulous.  We arrived and walked in to find no less than eight of our touring party in the place.  I think we must be telepathic at this point ('you can run, but you can€™t hide...')   Lovely evening all the same, as the sun set and the waves lapped onto the pebble beach.  A little piece of paradise.
