Load In / Rehearsal, Mexico City.

Load In / Rehearsal, Mexico City.
I got a very funny email from our lighting supplier this morning, after hed been to see a gig by another of his clients. 'Have you seen the current Coldplay show?', he asked in the email, '...they've obviously seen yours!'

Its St. Valentines day so a general reminder went through the camp that perhaps a phone call home might be a good idea. After a cold week it was very welcome to feel a distinct rise in temperature today. I headed down to the stadium early as Im still in possession of an extensive to do list. Mostly its small details which are quite enjoyable; I needed to tweak quite a few video clips and have a look at some lighting issues for the film shoots. I also needed to see if I could set fire to the b-stage which I sensed might create some anxiety amongst the tour carpenters, but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. The warm sunshine put the crew in good spirits despite their early start and the fact that the Mexican roads hadnt been terribly kind to some of the gear. I suspect this may be a hallmark of the coming weeks.

This is an amazing building. Its a huge high sided bowl-like concrete construction which has seen two World Cups and an Olympic Games. Apparently its the stadium where Maradona scored his 'hand of God' goal (Ive no idea what that means, but everybodys been on about it all day).

The band came in for a rehearsal and some filming. We had a look at the new set list, a new opening to the show and a general overhaul. It felt good to have the time to clean things up with everybody present. Once the band had left, our front of house team stayed on to continue programming. I put together a whole new Mysterious Ways execution which still needs work, but I am pleased with the look. When youre programming, you seem to enter a parallel time warp and 4am rolls round without reasonable warning. Given that the lads were in here at 6.30am I thought wed be best not to push it, so headed back to the ranch.

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
