Load In, Buenos Aires

In a fit of keenness I got up too early, but its a big day. In addition to the regular load in, all of the extra film lighting gear and camera equipment has to be worked into the system so there was a lot to do. The plan for this evening had been to shoot some additional footage for the 3D cameras, such as close ups and other shots, which would be difficult to get with an audience in the venue because of blocking sight lines and other logistical impossibilities. However, the fact that the trucks had to get here from Santiago, over the Andes one more time, meant that our production department couldnt guarantee what time the gear would make it and therefore what time wed be able to shoot - if at all. We were prepared for a worst case scenario but in the event the trucks arrived about 8.30am and the lads worked overtime to get the whole show system up and running by 9pm. Pretty remarkable work all round.

All film shoots involve armies of people. Its an entirely different process to touring in that the on-screen product is all that matters and there is no compromise on quality. If that means throwing crew at it, then thats what they do and in this case it has got to the point where the additional film personnel now outnumber our base touring crew. The floor of the stadium looked like the missing scene from The Making of Apocalypse Now with the space between the two b-stage ramps jammed to capacity with cranes, cables, boxes and film cameras. It was quite a sight, especially as each 3D camera is a pair of cameras side by side, one to shoot the left eye, the other to shoot the right.

Darkness eventually fell, so we could start lighting. We had a very clear plan and were able to execute it pretty quickly so finally, at about 10pm, the band took the stage. As ever, its hard for U2 to perform without an audience, but they made it through a dozen or so songs and gave us a great deal of fabulous looking footage that will be impossible to get tomorrow when the stadium is packed and heaving.

We finally wrapped at about 2am when all present were about ready to drop. Im not planning an early start tomorrow, thats for sure.
