I think most of the band party went to Nice last night but I am taking the opportunity to sneak off home for a day. That said, I've managed to fill the time with U2 360-related work, but a change is as good as a rest. Apparently.
During The Unforgettable Fire I have been filling the video screen with footage I shot at a little gallery installation which I show from time to time. It's called Lumia Domestica and is essentially a series of little machines that create a (very) miniature version of the aurora borealis by refracting light through terrifyingly hideous crystal glassware. What I love most about the result is how entirely analogue the light pictures feel. In a world of techno-video-splodge, these little things feel highly eccentric and lo-fi. Like a camp fire instead of a television. The video clips of the Lumia images work well in the 360 show, but the ones we've been using are very low resolution due to having been shot on my little pocket camera. Having this brief break I saw an opportunity to shoot some higher quality clips which will keep our tour video engineers happy. I'm pleased with them and their highly organic, analogue feel, especially coming right before the totally digital Shinjuku overload of City of Blinding Lights.
All day I've been getting messages about the blockade at Croke Park. Apparently the neighbours let us have our fun all weekend and are now taking their revenge by blocking the streets, lying in the road, etc. in the hope that they will hold up the trucks to the point where we'll have to cancel the next show (which is in Sweden, so a couple of long ferry-rides away). Alex sent me some pictures, entitled 'We are the angry mob', which are rather gestural as he said he was too scared to use flash. I gather that most of our trucks made it out of there so we may get to Gothenburg yet.
