Meadowlands I

Meadowlands I
The Continental Airlines Arena. Brendan Byrne Arena. Times move on, but for me this venue will forever be Meadowlands. During soundcheck this afternoon, the train spotter in me felt compelled to let the band know that we first played this building twenty years ago last month. Bono repeated it over the P.A. ('Willie has a shocking announcement') Its one thing to say 'I remember coming through this town 20 years ago and we played a little club, etc', but to be similarly nostalgic about an 18,000 seat arena is verging on the decadent. Anyway, its true, we did play here. Three nights on the Unforgettable Fire Tour in 1985. We must all have been 25 years old and ëPride was the new single. Ill dig up the set list. I wonder how many other songs that we played then are in the Vertigo show?

It was, to coin a phrase, a Beautiful Day. The sun shone and was visible from inside the gig, this being one of the quaintly old-fashioned type of venues that actually has windows. I couldnt resist the pull to head out and sit at the top of the ramp for a little while. It really is summer.

Great crowd at the gig. The band played two additional songs not scheduled for tonights set list, including coming back after '40' to play Vertigo again. This would indicate that they were having fun.

I couldnt be arsed doing the runner, so hitched a ride back in to Manhattan on one of the tour buses, which did at least provide an opportunity to ingest a sizeable quantity of beer and pizza, nightcap of champions.
