Boy Leg 2: 1980/81, Europe, America

Popped out for breakfast first thing and was surprised to see three Darth Vaders outside the hotel. Star Wars III opens tonight at a cinema next door (the spectacular Ziegfeld) and there have been people camped out for days, many in costumes which now, frankly, look a little the worse for wear.

Id planned a bit of a Manhattan morning, but plans were thwarted by a surprise attack from Good Morning America. Diane Sawyer interviewed the band in front of the stage this afternoon, to be broadcast later in the week. I was expecting the usual kind of TV affair - couple of lights and a camera - but ABC arrived with a production only marginally smaller than our own. They built another stage in the middle of the arena, had several cameras including a small crane and more lights than you could shake a swatch book at.

Highlight of the show was Bono pulling and entire punk band onto the stage. They were called the Bank Robbers and performed a version of Still Havent Found in their own unique style featuring a splendidly free form approach to vocal pitching. And we thought large-scale public karaoke was dead, ha!

I joined the runner back into Manhattan, arriving in time to see the huge queues around the block in Times Square for midnight premiere of Star Wars. It was a wonderful sight, reminiscent of the golden age of cinema. George Lucas will no doubt be sleeping sweetly tonight.
