Vertigo Leg 1: 2005, US

New York. Day off

New York. Day off
After a morning meeting about video content for the European show, followed by a spot of lunch, I finally managed to slip the leash for long enough to take in some art. The Diane Arbus show up at the Met is about to close, so I was very glad to see it. I love her work, she has such a specific and unflinching vision. Everything she looks at is tinged with weirdness, yet is almost invariably very beautiful at the same time. So many classic time-pieces - the boy with the hand-grenade in central park, the nudist family, the mental hospital patients in fancy dress. Its extraordinary to be able to photograph such bizarre scenes with a sympathetic eye. You can see the roots of so much that followed; Martin Parr, Cindy Sherman, David Lynch theyre all in there.

I seem to remember in tours gone by, that much of my tour diary was a log of which art galleries and museums Id visited on days off. For reasons no-one can quite put there finger on the Vertigo experience has been one of multiple plate spinning since day one, with film and video shoots, stadium productions, etc., all going on in the background, happy to fill our every waking hour. Hopefully the free-time backlash starts here.

In this vein, the evening outing was to go to see Spamalot the Monty Python musical. Given my parallel career in musical theatre, its always good to be able to go and see how the other half live. Found myself sitting next to Tom Hanks which was a tad surreal, but if you live in New York I am sure you get used to this sort of thing.

The theatre is conveniently situated a couple of blocks from the Algonquin Hotel, so we ducked in there to soak up the ambience, and soak up some adult beverages en route back to the hotel.
