Phoenix I

Phoenix I
Bit of a strange day. It might be the current leisurely pace of the tour, but it seemed like uphill work today. And everything broke. T-Bone Burrnett appeared at soundcheck which was lovely. He's a great guy and has been a longtime good friend to the band. Walking down a corridor after soundcheck a complete stranger asked me if I'd like to be fitted with a pair of orthotics for my shoes. This was some new laser process that maps your feet and produces perfectly fitting supports, so hey, I was in. And they were free. Told you it was a strange day.

And then the show. Well, everything broke. First to go was one of the 'Factory Lights'. These are rather splendid looking lights which I had made. They look like skeletal versions of what you might find lighting up your local slaughter house, but containing L.E.D. so they can produce light of any colour. They also do another trick at the end of the show, casting shadows all round the room in '40'. Anyhow, these things hang over the stage from doors-open until the beginning of the show, when they are supposed to rise majestically and disappear into the lighting rig till later. Tonight, one of them wouldn't move, so just continued to hang there. This wouldn't have been the end of the world, but unfortunately it was located exactly in the right place to hang directly in front of the projected image of the 'Boy' face which we use in 'Electric Co.' From where I was standing, I could just see the eyes peering over the metal cage which covered the rest of his face. It's Hannibal Lecter! We lost video control during Bullet, one of the pixel panels died, I lost control of the surveillance cameras, Dallas was having all kinds of trouble with Edge's guitar rig and the followspot operators were crap. However, during the final three songs of the night I went into the 'ellipse' enclosure in front of the stage. I 'd never been in here during a show before as I am only now being able to leave the controls for any length of time. I saw 'All Because of You', 'Yahweh' and '40' from in there and was reminded again that when the band are playing as well as they are on this tour, really nothing else matters. Despite my technical headaches it was a fantastic show and I am sure nobody went home complaining about the video signal. (Though perhaps a few stray thoughts about Hannibal Lecter)
