'Recreational Syllable'

'Recreational Syllable'
Wednesday 7th October 2009. Atlanta - New York.

Got up and went straight to the airport to get a flight back to New York. After the extraordinary convenience of travelling on a private plane, dealing with regular airport security and that old familiar experience of commercial travel seemed like a lot of hard work. Not to mention faintly absurd. I zenned out, relaxed and went with it. Picked up the new Philip Roth at an airport book stand, though this may be somewhat wishful thinking, given that I haven't read a recreational syllable for months.

There was WiFi on board the aircraft, which was a first for me. It felt oddly normal to be able to sit in my seat sending email and surfing the net. If this catches on it may be a while before I get to read any recreational syllables at all, on tour anyway.

Back in New York, getting to my little crow's nest room seemed unnaturally like coming home. I was absolutely whacked so took a bit of a nap before surfacing to face my monstrous 'to do' list. Worked till the evening when a few of us escaped downtown to a favourite sushi place of mine on Houston St. From there across the street to a fantastically funky hole-in-the-wall bar with a great juke box. Finally, on to a restaurant where Gavin was having his birthday dinner with some of our group. We just called in for a drink and a happy birthday, though they were just about wrapping up when we got there. There was talk of going on to a club 'for just one more' but I could see that trouble was brewing so I slipped into a cab and headed back to midtown. If I don’t get some sleep tonight I may as well give up...

Latest Willie's Diary

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
