I almost managed a day off today, just a couple of hours of e.mail and phone calls. Received e.mail from Steve Jobs and Jony Ive which was really nice.
Being Tuesday, the event of the evening was Trannyshack. This is a weekly event at a bar South of Market, which is your average run of the mill open-mike gender-fuck performance-art scene. I'm sure you know the kind of thing. Each week has a theme and this week, by great luck, they were hosting the annual Trannshack 'Drag Races'. Yes, I am afraid this is exactly what your worst nightmares might assume. In an alley down the side of the club, packs of drag queens take part in sprinting races, huge heels and all. It's a splendidly out-there spectacle. There were a few heats and then the grand final, which ended in dispute as a homeless guy appeared from out of a dumpster, joined the race and won - to much wig-throwing outrage.
Later, back inside the club, there were some performances themed to celebrate the occasion, performed to such tunes as 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush, 'I Ran' by A Flock of Seagulls, 'Stars of Track and Field' by Belle and Sebastian and, most surreal of all, a mood piece performed to 'Running to Standstill'. If only the lads could have seen it. I did run into Ash, the computer code whiz who designed and wrote the software that controls our entire show, so at least he could share the moment. He's now left the tour so is spending a few days here with his partner Henry, to decompress. They roll the sidewalks up at 2am in San Francisco on a week night, so we ended up at Orphan Andy's, an all-night diner in my old neighbourhood. Much fun.
