San Jose Arena I
For reasons too long and complicated to go into, I've been to Detroit and back since the last gig, leaving there at 6am (3am San Jose time) this morning to get a flight back via San Francisco. Consequently I arrived at the venue feeling like I'd been hit by a truck, but managed to fake it for most of the day It was a really good show but I couldn't swear that all of me was there.
Two shows here means no load out, but there was an amount of hanging out and socialising at the gig afterwards, if nothing else to let the car park traffic clear out. At 1am I checked into the hotel It may have been partly due to my somewhat altered state, but it seemed to me like a very weird place - motel-by-freeway vibe. It consisted of two storey buildings huddled round a kidney shaped swimming pool, but with an annex out the back which was shared as dorm room accommodation for the adjoining medical centre. I was staying in the annex, which was about as tatty as you can imagine, and opened my door onto a huge room containing no furniture. It was like a conference room, largely empty, with a bed shivering in one corner. Way at the other end of the vast space was a door to a tiny shower room. The only other item in the place was a shelf half way down one wall on which was perched a coffee machine and a huge boom box. Is it me, or does this sound the teeniest bit creepy?
I called Bruce and asked if he wanted to.well, do anything that would get me out of the room. We met by the pool and lay on sunloungers in the dark, whilst scantily-clad ,older middle-aged women frolicked in the hot tub. Oddly, none of this made me feel any more normal.
