Johannesburg. Load in day.
Things were predictably quiet around Villa 1 this morning where I enjoyed a very pleasant late breakfast on the terrace. The sun is out in full force today and it makes me realise how fortunate we were that it was cloudy yesterday. If it had been like this we'd have absolutely fried ourselves.
A party of us headed down to the venue in the afternoon. It's a bit of a trek and I didn't really have anything terribly urgent that I needed to do, but I'm aware that it's viewed as good form for me to show up on day one after a break. Today is the birthday of one of my lighting crew, for whom I'd swiped a bottle of champagne from Villa 1, and another of my guys had a baby during the break, so I'd done a raid on Baby Gap prior to departing the UK.
The venue, "Soccer City", is quite extraordinary. I don't find it particularly beautiful but it is vast and our stage sits very nicely in there. The stadium stands are very high so with the best part of 100,000 people in there it should be loud as hell. I took a wander about the place, greeting my team, giving gifts and generally doing a bit of a Lady Di. Managing not to overstay my welcome, I bailed for the hotel around 6pm.
Back at Villa 1 I could see party tendencies emerging so I took myself off to bed. School night and all that.
