Seattle Key Arena II

Seattle Key Arena II
Bruce and I had lunch with Paul Zumwalt, with whom I worked on theExperience Music Project here in Seattle. It was breakfast really, but the menu had ticked over into it next phase, so we each tried to find asuitably unaggressive alternative. Afterwards we took a stroll through the new public library designed by Rem Koolhaas. I liked it, despite it being quite brutal. It manages to maintain some intimacy in the internal spaces, and even manages to feel a bit like a library. The interior colour scheme is just savage though. I walked along a corridor which had ceiling, floor and one wall painted crimson and the remaining wall painted pink. I actually felt my lips vibrate in awe at the juxtaposition. Suits you, sir.

Down at the venue I had something of a press schedule, being interviewed by not one but two lighting magazines. The interviewers were all people I knew, though, so it wasn't overly intimidating.Bono thought the good people of Seattle had behaved so well that they deserved to hear Vertigo at the beginning of the show and then again at the end. This provoked quite a backstage scramble, but was highly entertaining all the same. In another unexpected turn, I ended up doing a surprise runner to Vancouver after the show, as we have an early meeting at GM Place tomorrow with the French film directors. Having spent the tour thus far traveling with the crew party, this was my maiden flight on Vertigo Air so received a standing ovation when I boarded which was deeply touching.

William Gibson also joined us on the plane; cyber-punk author, legend and long-time source of inspiration to those of us engaged with trying to dream up the future.
