Show Day: Antwerp - Sportpaleis, Show One
It's only a two hour drive from Amsterdam to Antwerp, so we didn't bother with the plane today & undertook the journey in a convoy of minibuses. Antwerp holds the rare distinction of being a city I have never visited before which becomes more of a rarity as the years go by. U2 were also making their debut in Antwerp, which makes a welcome change from retreading the same ground tour after tour.
It was a bit of a home gig for the tour too, as U2 has employed more than its fair share of Belgians over the years. The Elevation tour continues this trend, most notably in the video department, though tonight also saw a visit from another son of Belgium, Walter van Bierendonck, the fashion designer who put all the clothes together for the PopMart tour, along with his partner Dirk.
Great show. Loud, loud audience. Afterwards, the band drove to stay the night in Brussels, but I stayed on here and went out with Walter & Dirk. This has been a very big weekend in Antwerp, with a city-wide festival going on, so the place looked like a small nuclear had just passed through it. Good to catch up with them, all the same.
