Show Day: Arnhem - Gelredome, Show One

Show Day: Arnhem - Gelredome, Show One
I found myself a little sad to be leaving Berlin this morning (even though we were going to Holland which remains one of my favourite countries on our fair planet.) I really enjoyed discovering the area round our hotel & down the broad avenue "Unter Den Linden". It'll be interesting to see how the city develops in years to come.

And so to Arnhem. "A Bridge Too Far" and all that. "And all what?" you may ask, and in all honesty, I wouldn't have much of a reply. I know it was something to do with military over ambition, war atrocities and brave resistance against the Nazis on the part of the Dutch, but that's really all I can tell you about Arnhem. Except that Audrey Hepburn was born here. Before she was famous.

This is the largest indoor venue of the tour. It's a covered football stadium, holding about 35,000 and looking pretty big after the recent run of gymnasiums. Conversely, though, it is half the size of any gig we did on PopMart, so the audience (and indeed the newspaper critics) still found it 'intimate', due in no small part to the Dutch audience who have been vital to U2 since the earliest times. U2's very first shows outside Ireland & the UK were in Holland and it seems they've never forgotten it.

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
