Show Day: Birmingham - N.E.C., Show Two
"Light & Sound Design", the lighting supply company for this tour, is based in Birmingham so a posse of us went down there this morning to discuss what we are going to need for the outdoor version of the Elevation show when we get to Slane.
My brother is still around, though this is the last day of his visit to the tour so we went out to find a suitably pretty village pub for lunch. The picture perfect village of Hampton in Arden presented itself, plus the ancient pub with nice food. When a tour only takes you into major metropolitan areas its easy to forget that escape is possible with just a little effort. Well, a little effort and a relative with a car, perhaps. It was a gorgeous afternoon and we made the most of it, having a stroll round the village and its church, which is a mere 870 years old (always good for a bit of perspective).
Tonight's show was my favourite so far in the UK. I can't really say why, but some nights it all just comes together for you. The band wandered from the set list too, which I enjoy as it keeps everyone on their toes. Nice to hear Party Girl again.
After the show we headed directly back to London. I travelled down in a minibus with the "Party Girls" who had stocked the van with drinks and videos for the trip. We ended up drinking champagne and watching "Spinal Tap", which is of course a classic tour movie. I hadn't seen it few a few years, but its genius still remains untarnished. We just howled our way through it, deciding which members of our tour staff were represented by which characters in the movie. It's just an endless stream of understated one liners & the "deli tray" sequence is just sublime. ("Who's in here" nobody it's a joke...)
