Show Day: Hartford - Civic Centre
This was something of a homecoming, being one of the very first arenas U2 played in the USA (or anywhere else on earth for that matter) way back on the War Tour in 1983. I remember the place seeming unfathomably enormous and seeing our tiny 'white flag' production cowering up one end of the hall. We came back here many times on subsequent tours and the place remains familiar, despite the addition of some corporate boxes up on high.
Overheard a great conversation at lunchtime in the hotel bar across the street. The place was deserted apart from a couple of local good old boys, a few drinks in and propping up the bar. The only other person in there was P.J.Harvey, having a spot of lunch by herself. Through ex-pat force of habit I automatically started to pay attention when I heard an English accent, and vaguely started to tune in before I realize who was speaking. Our plaid shirted early drinkers were basically chatting her up, asking if she was in town for the concert, etc. Polly was very polite as always, introducing herself and explaining she was the opening band. The next question was, of course, 'Oh! What kind of music do you play? With a name like 'Polly Jean' it sounds like you must be a country & western singe.... Its probably just as well they didn't come along to find out.
