Vertigo Leg 1: 2005, US

Show day, Melbourne.

Show day, Melbourne.
Its been another gorgeous spring day, or perhaps we are segueing into summer now. Its so hard to keep up. The whole thing of Christmas in Spring is still doing my head in, even though I should be well used to it by now. It just seems so silly - especially as many Christmas decorations are of the traditional northern hemisphere type, i.e. reindeer and snow. They sit there glistening away in the blazing sunlight - its all most odd.

Being the last date of our Australian tour put a slightly wistful air on proceedings for me, especially as I dont know when Ill next be back here. At the venue I talked with the band about the set list, re-jigging things a little, adding The First Time as there have been no sightings from Zooropa as yet. We also added Bad as an optional extra encore if things went well.

It turned out to be a great show, made all the more enjoyable for not having the roof on our mix position. The crowd were well up for it and the venue really helped - during the day it looks rather ugly, but after dark it functions very well for a big gig, being high and enclosed. Peter Garrett appeared too and joined Bruce, Smasher and I up on our bit of the riser. Were usually fiercely protective of our little corral behind the guest platform and there arent many people wed tolerate standing right amongst us during a show (Paul McGuinness is about the only person wholl occasionally brave the barriers and rude notices to join us). Peter was welcome though, adding to the atmosphere by clapping and singing. It was great fun.

We got to Kite at the very end of the show, then sure enough Edge struck up the sequence for Bad as a special farewell. It was so good to hear that song again and the sense of occasion was not lost on the audience. By the time the final bows came the atmosphere in the place so high it was pretty breathtaking.
