Show Day, Mexico City

Having go to bed about 5am it wasnt the best start to the day to be woken by a phone call from an Argentine journalist looking for a press pass. 'I interviewed you seven years ago, do you remember?'. Err. 'My tape recorder broke, so I had to make notes, do you remember?'Err Some time later I got up and stumbled into the shower when she rang again, offering to be a tour guide when we get to Argentina because I'd been so nice to her in 1988, apparently. Well, I guess it was sincerely meant, but her timing was not the best. Am considering using a hotel pseudonym.

As ever, started the day online to see what was happening in the outside world. I noted that an Edward Steichen photograph Id been keeping an eye on sold at Sothebys in New York for $2.9 million. It was only last November that photography at auction broke the million dollar barrier (a Richard Prince piece at $1.2m), so this is stratospheric by comparison. Its a spectacular picture, mind you.

We crawled through traffic to get to the gig and on arrival I was straight into the usual show day run around. I want to re-stage the way we shoot Bullet the Blue Sky, using the hand held cameras, so had to make sure everyone (not least the singer) was on the same page. Were also filming with 3D camera set-ups for the shows on this South American run (its an experiment), which adds yet another layer of complexity to an already very complex show. The night was warm and the audience was well up for it. The new set list was much more appropriate for the show starting in darkness (as opposed to the European shows, many of which started in daylight or dusk). It was clear from Monterrey that the audiences here are less familiar with U2 material form the 80s, so we put in a lot more material from the 90s onwards, including a slew of tunes from Achtung Baby, which always helps the party go with a swing. The bowl-like stadium kept the vibe inside and we really had a good time.

I was a little weary by the time we got back to the hotel but still somehow found myself on a roof top bar somewhere at 5am.
