Due to the early night, I actually managed to get up at a reasonable hour and get down to the Philadelphia Art Museum before heading to the gig. I was here once before about five or six years ago and have never forgotten it as their collection is spectacular, particularly the modern / contemporary section. There's a whole Duchamp room that includes the big broken glass 'The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even' and his 'Nude Descending a Staircase', an image so often duplicated that you forget the original's a painting, not something that was turned out in Photoshop. It also has that mad installation of the naked torso lying in grass, which you have to view by peeping through a hole in a big old wooden door.

There was a fantastic Cy Twombly gallery with eight of his gigantic angry red scribbles. Another room houses a mixture of Brancusi sculptures and Mondrian paintings, which sounds like an unlikely combination (ultra smooth polished curvy sculpture vs. totally linear abstract paintings) but works extraordinarily well. It was all very inspiring, though oddly (for me) the piece I found most intriguing was a tiny little Cezanne painting of bathers which I stuffed up my jumper before sneaking out of a side door.

Venue. Soundcheck. Gig. Aeroplane. Washington DC.
