Show Day: Pittsburgh - Mellon Arena

Show Day: Pittsburgh - Mellon Arena
Mellon Arena? Mellon? Who O.K.'d that, I wonder? But then the team that plays here is called the 'Pittsburgh Penguins', so nomenclature in general doesn't appear to be this city's forte. I was imagining being at an ice hockey game and having to shout 'Go Penguins!' in support of your team. Hardly a cry that would put fear into the hearts of the enemy. Anyway, The Beatles played here in 1932 apparently, so the place does have a solid place in rock history. I also learned today that Tom Ford, one of our sound crew, was there, aged eight and holding a placard saying 'Welcome Beatles'.

There's a large Irish population in this city, so U2 has always been warmly welcomed. The band played the recently blown-up Three Rivers Stadium on each of the past three tours which is a pretty astonishing thought. Its funny how different crowds go for different songs and tonight Sunday Bloody Sunday just about brought the roof in. Walk On was very sweet too, as there were a few punters down the front who'd brought along bubble blowers, which was all very Top Of The Pops.

After the show we bailed for Chicago, and I noticed that outside the back of the gig, one of our truck drivers appeared to be having a 'Mellon Festival' all of his own, but that's another matter altogether.

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
