Show day: San Diego - Sports Arena
I read in the Observer that Harry Secombe died (though rumours that he was listening to "The Fly" at the time are, I think unfounded). He was a very funny man.

We commuted to San Diego for the day, to play the smallest arena on the tour. Its a venue U2 have played on several occasions, initially as the opening act for the J.Geils Band in 1982. The upside of being in a smaller hall, though, was the closer proximity of the crowd to the stage. This made for an extremely loud audience, which helps any evening go with a swing.

After the show, it was a short flight back to L.A., so we were in full on party mode. Our "Elevation Air" plane was full to capacity with friends, family & guests, including Salman Rushdie (not someone I could have forseen ending up on an aeroplane with at any stage, but such is life in View Master world). I had another Viewmaster moment once we'd landed in L.A. We've been flying in and out of Van Nuys airfield which is a much smaller airport than LAX or Burbank. A lot of private traffic comes through here, but there are some 747s too. It was about 1am when we disembarked, and as I was stepping on to the tarmac a Cathay Pacific jumbo jet was taking off on the adjacent runway. The thing roared by in the darkness about 50 feet away, a blur of light streaks making a noise like God and I laughed out loud as I heard the video playback in my head, "it was a beautiful day..."

It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.
