Show Day: Toronto - Air Canada Centre, 2nd night
Went into the gig early today as we're videotaping some of the show tonight in preparation for the big shoot in Boston. We attempted to do this last night, but one of the vital elastic bands broke somewhere within the hi-tech recording gear so we lost audio. Recording the show demands a good deal more work from the key personnel - "Smasher" our video engineer, Bruce our lighting director and of course Joe on audio - so it was good to get it out of the way before soundcheck.
I also had Smasher edit a new piece of video, which I wanted to put in the show. It's an intriguing abstract piece by Jennifer Steinkamp, called "Phase Equals Time" (though the Belgians generally refer to it as "the snot sequence"). It looks a bit like paint running vertically down a stick, in a very gooey, slithery and vaguely rude-looking manner. I love this piece but have never found a song for it to go in, so thought I might just edit out one small section and run it through just once between two songs, as a kind of incidental, subliminal segue. (In point of fact, during the show when I threw it in between Kite and New York, due to being in a black out it was far from subliminal. Actually it was REALLY VERY BRIGHT and looked more than a tad ridiculous, but I haven't given up on it by any means).
After the show I retired to Bus 3 with Bruce & two friends of mine, Bob & L.J., with whom I worked on a dance show "La La La Human Steps", a hundred years ago on a different planet. Great to catch up & lots of laughs as Bus 3 is the home of surreal humour. ("Q: Which opening act singer might you find served in an Italian Restaurant? A: SpaghettiPollyHarvey"). You kind of had to be there.
