Show Day: Zurich - Hallenstadion, Show Two
Spent the early part of the morning swearing out of my hotel room window at some guy with a hammer and chainsaw, who eventually got the message and went for a fag. I was a bit antsy anyway as I had to go to the dentist this morning. I lost a filling, so have been in a bit if a bad way and of course organizing a dental appointment is yet another simple domestic task which balloons to a monumental feat of international organization when you're on tour. I thought Switzerland might be a safe bet in terms of oral expertise, though I confess to a moments doubt when I saw that the local promoter had made an appointment for me with a dentist called - I kid you not - Peter Sellers. Anyway, Mr. Sellers turned out to be a splendid chap with flawless English and the surgery - well! In a country where the subway station platforms are clean enough to eat off, can you imagine what the inside of a dentist's looks like? It was like being on the set of '2001', which I have to say did absolutely nothing to take my mind off the scraping, whittling and scrunching involved in sorting me out with a temporary plug.
Naturally I was feeling a bit sorry for myself, so was glad that it was a second show day, where the pace is generally slower. Another good gig with Bono making the crowd laugh with his attempts at Swiss-German, a language which apparently has no grammatical rules or even a dictionary of its own. Hard to imagine how you could go wrong, really.
