'Something of a Homecoming'

22 September 2010
'Something of a Homecoming'
Brussels.  Show day.

It is a well-documented fact that the Flemish have the U2 360 pretty much sewn up.  As with Jews on Broadway or gays in the Anglican clergy, if all the Belgians left the U2 360 tour there'd be practically nobody left to run the operation.  In particular, steel and video are the two areas most heavily colonised, with the giant steel structure having been built by Stage Co. in Werchter and the video screen having been built by Frederic Opsomer and Barco.  We've even got a Belgian astronaut in the show.

Consequently, this is something of a homecoming for the 360 stage.  The town of Werchter, where we first saw the test-build of the claw skeleton steel, is only about 35km from the stadium.  That already feels like a lifetime ago but I will never forget arriving at Werchter at the beginning of last year and seeing this giant silver spider towering above the town skyline.

We had another great crowd (I'm still slightly in awe of this run of exceptional shows) and after the gig was a crew party hosted by our Belgian tour vendors.  Happily it was held in the grounds of a hotel right next door to the venue so transportation couldn't have been simpler.  It was a brave move to hold an outdoor event this time of year but the gamble paid off and a very good time was had by all.  Belgian beer for all and catering courtesy of the ubiquitous frites-and-mayonnaise van.

It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.
