'Spotted Pig'

'Spotted Pig'
New York.  Day off.

Not unsurprisingly, after the big ‘New York’ rock show, things ran late into the night and got pleasantly out of hand. We ended up at the Spotted Pig in the West Village until god-knows-what o’clock with half the band and half the guest list. I seem to remember mojitos being the drink of the night, and certainly the state of my head this morning would back up that theory.

I managed to stagger out and meet a friend for breakfast in the marvellously air-conditioned Time Warner building. It actually seems to be getting hotter in New York as the week goes on, so if it continues like this we’ll be in trouble.

Ambitions were low for the day. Reviews of last night seem unanimously positive and feedback from our team similarly so. I actually thought Bono might die on stage it was so hot in the stadium but he made it through, even playing the bulk of the long set, until the sound curfew finally cut them off.

One of our team had a birthday today (conveniently, with a team this big, it’s almost always somebody’s birthday) so we gathered for drinks way downtown at the very pleasant Greenwich Hotel. It was murder getting a cab but I did eventually make it and enjoyed hanging out with everyone for an hour or so. I had another dinner to go on to, being the social butterfly that I am, so bade farewell to my chums and headed through the hotel lobby to see what chance in hell there was of finding another cab. I joked with the doorman that this might be near impossible and (clearly assuming that I was a hotel guest) he said, 'If your destination is below 34th St, we’d be happy to offer you our complimentary hotel limousine service, sir.'  Not wishing to disillusion this helpful chap, I hopped in the limo and enjoyed a stylish ride uptown.  If you’re ever in that part of Manhattan and need a lift, I’d thoroughly recommend it.

I had a great dinner with friends but sadly no limo awaited to take me back to the Hotel Fabulous, so I took the subway. The underground trains in New York are kept air-conditioned at glacial levels but not so the station platforms and it was baking down there. People are going to start dying if this carries on much longer.  Or maybe they'll just get into a subway car and ride around forever.
