Travel Day

Glasgow to Dublin. Joe O' was having a party in Dublin tonight to celebrate the 50th birthday of Jo Ravitch, his longstanding audio assistant. Consequently, Joe wanted to leave early and I'd decided to go with him, being the 'go with' kind of guy that I am. By 8am I was severely regretting this decision, but at least I was back in bed at the Clarence by noon.

I stayed in bed all afternoon as I was feeling slightly under the weather and I am very aware that the next few days are going to feature extremely late nights. That's the downside of lighting outdoor rock shows, the only time you can see what you're doing is at dead of night.

Headed to Slane at around 7pm and ate dinner in catering. Most of the lighting system was up and running, so by nightfall we were pretty much ready to start focusing. Tonight's project was the audience. We're filming the show on Saturday, which requires a different approach to the lighting (usually more of it) particularly where the audience is concerned. You need a good level of light so the camera can get a sense of the size of the crowd, but you don't want to wash everything out and kill the atmosphere. It's a bit of a balancing act, so I had dedicated tonight to getting it right. What I hadn't anticipated was the pissing rain, but I had wrapped up against the elements and even took the precaution of stealing an umbrella from the hotel.

It was a long night, but I did get a chuckle out of occasional moments of clarity realising what a ludicrous job I have - tramping all over this gigantic field at dead of night, umbrella in one hand, walkie-talkie in the other, squinting at pools of light 'up a bit, down a bit, spin the bubble.'

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
