'Travelling Solo'Travel Day. Munich to Paris.
My off-piste EuroRail binge continued today with another marathon journey from Munich to Paris. Well, I say marathon but the experience of travelling on European trains is so pleasant when compared to the hell of flying that it really wasn't a chore at all.
I'm travelling solo today, and changed trains in Mannheim, breaking the journey into two roughly equal parts of around three hours each. The Munich to Mannheim leg was pretty uneventful, spent largely sleeping off the beer/champagne/scotch headache that I managed to acquire with Bono and Michael Mittermeier last night. On waking up after a nap, I thought I had developed some kind of tinnitus, hearing indistinct but weirdly familiar noise in my head, breaking through the remnants of my hangover fuzz. I turned in a little more and realised that what I was hearing was a tinny and distant, yet utterly unmistakable rendition of Get on Your Boots. Was I hallucinating or in some aural dream torpor? Pulling myself together a little I figured out that the sound was coming from directly in front of me & peering over the next seat I saw that two guys were just settling in to watch the U2 Rosebowl DVD with earbuds in. Unsettling.
It was dark by the time I pulled into Gare du Nord. I took the number 4 metro line to Montparnasse, located the crew hotel and checked in. It was late enough that I'd missed the period of time where I might have run into a potential dining companion so headed out alone. I'd had plans of going to one of my favourite haunts here, but it was getting late and after a day's travelling, frankly, I couldn't be arsed. Consequently, I just walked down the road and went into the first place which looked like it was open and decent. Quelle irony to find that this place, La Consigne, has themed décor in the style of an antique railway dining car. I went for it anyway, later being joined by Alex who helped finish off a giraffe of house red.
