'What could possibly go wrong?'

2
Saturday 24th October 2009. Los Angeles. Load in day.

Late night at the Rosebowl. It's been a hell of a day for the tour crew, getting here from Las Vegas and getting the show constructed here with a compressed load-in time. On top of this there's a shed-load of additional cameras, lighting, sound, recording and video trucks being wheeled in for the broadcast and live shoot tomorrow. Normally something like this would be done over two nights (all the U2 live DVDs since Rattle and Hum have been shot over two nights) but in suitably post-modern kamikaze spirit we've decided to shoot the biggest show we've ever built in just one night. Plus it's being streamed live on YouTube. What could possibly go wrong?

This makes tonight the only opportunity to get any time in the stadium in the dark to gauge what it might actually look like. We don't have the band, of course, and being a residential neighbourhood we can't make any noise, but at least we'll get some sense of how it might turn out.

That said, I suppose I should get on with it...

Latest Willie's Diary

Within the bands entourage (certainly by comparison to the crews clockwork scheduling) travel departure times are often a little loose. This morning was especially so, due to three contradictory memos which had been emailed out last night and this morning.

There was a 6.30pm conference call arranged between Bono (Dublin), The Edge (Los Angeles), Steve Matthews (London) and myself (also London) to blow the cobwebs off our brains and discuss the reincarnation of the Vertigo Tour.

I was planning on resurrecting the tour diary today, being the day we were scheduled to fly to Auckland for the load-in tomorrow. However, its now old news that the remainder of the tour dates have been postponed, so Im not going anywhere further than the corner cafe. Its been a very weird week indeed - much akin to driving into a wall.
