Show Report

'Give me one more chance, and you'll be satisfied.
Give me two more chances, you won't be denied.'

Opening night of three at Estadio Unico de La Plata in Buenos Aires tonight and a big surprise right at the top of the show as the return of Space Oddity gave way to the unmistakable opening bars of Even Better Than The Real Thing. A huge response from this capacity crowd for a song that hasn't been in the live set for almost a decade, and the Argentinian volume levels didn't drop all night.

'What time is it in the world and where are we going?
Palermo... San Telmo... Canitas... Buenos Aires!'

Magnificent led into Mysterious Ways and before the return of the new and unreleased North Star we had a stadium-wide rendition of Happy Birthday led by Edge to Chanty, a good friend who's in town. Felt like there was a big Irish community in the house tonight.'Still Haven't Found' included a shout out to a special guest:'John Cusack in the house tonight.'

Bono wondered aloud why this place 'so far from where we live feels so much like home', before introducing his 'team-mates' with a suitably sporting theme for this soccer-crazy nation:'The youngest member of U2, with the feet of a dancer and a truly great dribbler.. Larry Mullen Jnr on drums'; also on stage tonight,'the handsome, El Pipita of U2 on bass guitar' and 'the omnipresent... Pupi Zanetti of our band, The Edge.'As for the singer? 'Not so sure but If I could be him I'd be Carlitos Apache...'

Great vibes all round, both celebratory and serious: felt like the entire stadium was clapping in unison during a moving instrumental version of Mothers of the Disappeared as Bono recited the names of the 'madres'. Special mention tonight also to so many fans who have been waiting outside, camping for days, ahead of this show.
'What a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful night, we will not forget this, what a great country you have, what a great city, out in La Plata, where the streets really don't have names. This Grand Madness, this Space Station, let's take out your phones and make it disappear...'

And there was one other special reference before the close:'Think about Gustavo Cerati...we send love, love, love and respect and he will hear your voices tonight.' As Alexis in Buenos Aires added on Twitter:'Bono just sent a big kiss and hug to Gustavo Cerati,a huge Argentinian musician, that is in coma for almost an year, great moment for Argentinian fans...'

La Plata loves U2
Yesterday's show was amazing. May be the best one of U2 history. I feel so happy to be there. The best track played was Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me and the most memorable moment was when Bono dedicate a song to Gustavo Ceratti. You're the best. Thanks you so much to come to La Plata.

March 30th
The show was fantastic and I am looking forward to repeat this on saturday night. I loved it when you sang "Walk on", though I think one of the Highlights was the performance for Hold me, Trill me, Kiss me, Kill me. But I love the whole show!... I am speechless!

Magnificent!!!
What can I say about last night concert?? Overwhelming?? Nah, just a word!!! Last night at La Plata, every emotion was at play... the stadium, the people, the place...and THE BAND!!!!!! If I have to choose a moment, very difficult to do, I would choose Miss Sarajevo, where Bono sang with all his might and soul... Lovely!!! But how can I not mention Sunday Bloody Sunday that made the whole city rock? or Where the streets have no name _ so fitting for the city_with a chorus of more than 60,000 people??? The intro with Even better than the real thing after so many years of not being played was just a hint of what was to come...And yes it was even better than the real thing.I will never forget that night, not even when I am going to see them twice more!!! Love you, guys, thanks!!!!

Getting there
Ok, let's leave a side the GREATNESS of U2 and the show and talk about the road to get to the stadium: It was the worst ever...FIVE HOURS to get to the stadium being 50 kilometres from it and a few less hours to get back home. I paid for my ticket as everyone and I couldn't see Muse and I just got a few minutes before U2's show started. You know, it's not the distance from the stadium, it was the most full traffic jam ever! PLEASE, NEVER PLAY IN THAT STADIUM AGAIN. I hope I don't get any fan angry, I'm just talking about the road, not the band.

You did it again!!
Incredible night in Buenos Aires! The first seven tracks where a punch in the face. Awesome start with Even Better, a perfect start up! Very touching for me remembering Gustavo Cerati, and for everyone in the house. Great set list and feeling between the band and us. A lot of beautiful medleys (Bob Marley!). Going again on Saturday waiting for Pride, Acrobat instead of HMTMKMKM and maybe Bad (is it too much to ask?). Love you guys since 1988 (I was only 10 years old).

Put back unknow caller!!
I can see by the setlist on chile that "unknow caller" and "no line in the horizon" are out. They are two of the best songs in the new album and two of the best moments of the dvd show! Please guys, put this songs back next week. If you really want to reduce the number of songs from the last album cut "get on your boots" and "scarlete". I sure this songs will be much less missed.
jlck1975 - 26 March, 2011
