Show Report

'Trem das Onze', a samba composition by Adoniran Barbosa, was playing ahead of the band's arrival on stage tonight. It's one of the most famous of all Brazilian songs but when it gave way to 'Space Oddity' finally Brazil knew that U2 were heading to the stage and before we knew it we were all caught up in 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'.

'Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo...' Bono sang, the whole stadium grateful that there was no rain coming down as the first of three shows here got underway.'Even Better', already in contention for the best opening track of the tour to date, led into I Will Follow and then 'Boots, two tracks written thirty years apart but you'd never know it from the reaction of this super-passionate audience. Phenomenal sound from all around.

We've had some mixed weather in Sao Paulo today but it was dry as the first of three shows in this city got underway, with spectacular shards of lightning in the sky illuminating a helicopter buzzing over the stadium.

'Wow! Thank you. Obrigado.' said Bono. 'Tonight is Saturday in Sao Paulo...'

Introductions to the band took a pizza twist with Bono describing himself as the pepperoni pizza, Adam as the banana pizza and Larry... 'No cheese, no tomato, no pastry, no pizza - we call him the good looking pizza. Larry Mullen on drums.'

An acoustic version of Stuck In A Moment made its way back into the set tonight, dedicated to Julian Lennon to whom the band led a rendition of Happy Birthday.

'We'd like to sing this song for a friend of ours, Julian Lennon...here's a song about friendship.'

With a stadium of Brazilians singing along word for word, it was a little bit spine-tingling, as was the poetry read by a young woman who made her way into the spotlight before Beautiful Day.

'We're so proud to be friends of Brazil,' said Bono, as, a beautiful night coming to a close, he paused to pay tribute to the people of this country and to President Dilma Rousseff. 'We salute you, we salute her.'

And then an incredibly touching moment with Moment of Surrender going out to those who lost their lives in the shooting at Tasso da Silveira school in Rio di Janeiro on Thursday.
' This has been a difficult time for Brazil... and what happened in Tasso da Silveira.
'We'd like to dedicate this to the children and the mothers and their families and the teachers and the people of Brazil.'

And as Moment of Surrender offered its beautiful benediction, the names of the children who lost their lives illuminated the giant screens around the stage. Unforgettable.

Were you at the opening show in Sao Paulo tonight? What was the moment you got stuck in, the moment you'll never surrender? Add your own reviews and upload your photos below.

Depois de assistir ao Pop Mart em 1998 pensei que não teríamos um show melhor do U2. Engano meu, eles se superam a cada nova etapa...

Moment of surrender
Moment of surrender was the most touching moment of the show, I expected him to say something about the kids of tasso da silveira, but never expected this... I was crying as was most of the people at the stadium... It was really a time to surrender to everything we had experienced.... it was simply amazing...

O melhor show do mundo
Já estive em alguns shows internacionais, mas este com certeza foi e será sempre o melhor. Por tudo que vi e ouvi naquele lugar, a energia contagiante toma conta de mim até hoje. Simplesmente me tornei dependente desta emoção. Preciso de mais deste show. Pode ser em qualquer lugar do mundo. Por favor comecem logo a próxima turnê. "I've been in some international shows, but this was certainly the best and always will be. For all I saw and heard in that place, the infectious energy comes over me today. I just became dependent on this emotion. I need more of this show. It can be anywhere in the world. Please just start the next tour."

Fourteen at U2 360° in São Paulo 110409
We travel more than a thousand miles from northeast to southeast of Brasil to watch the concert. An unspeakable spectacle. We were stunned by the lights and clear sound. It was a old dream of us to see a live concert of U2 and this was the best way to realize it.

Should I stay or should I go?
As a huge and crazy U2 fan, I was on the three concerts in São Paulo and on the first day I was called up on the stage to read part of a brazilian song called "carinhoso". Even being a fan since I was a kid and having U2 part of my entire life, I never had the ambition to think I would be so close to Bono. When I finished reading the song, I have the impression Bono said: "Wait". Beautiful day started and Bono stepped away while a guy from security started waiving at me like: "Come on, leave the stage..." however, after watching the video 100000 times now, I realized that maybe I was not supposed to leave the stage as Bono was looking for me when Beautiful day started... Did anybody have the same impression??? That´s so disappointing!! I was there and I had the feeling I could have stayed longer, but the security guy waived at me at the wrong time :(((

Thermomether
The best thermometer of the show I had was not feeling my full satisfaction, because I am a fan of U2 for over 20 years, but listening to my 70 years old father-in-law who didn´t knew a single song, after standing up for more than six hours to watch the show, say "it was fantastic! Im glad to be here"

Just like a dream
I owed my husband a U2 show for a long time. That was the moment. It was meant to be in São Paulo, April 9, 2011. We stared at the show! It was incredible! Unbelivable!!! Everything was great! But I have to confess the most memorable moment for me was when U2 left the stage. I desperately cried for several minutes. For a little bit more than 2 hours I saw my entire life pass by me in U2's songs. I still can figure it out... Thank you guys for being here! Zelia
