'From a very organic place'

21 July 2009
The Edge was a guest on Gerry Ryan's 2FM show this morning, talking about this weekend's Dublin shows and the band's support for a new scheme to offer young people in Ireland the chance to learn a musical instrument or get vocal tuition.

The band have been 'playing a few warm up shows before Dublin' which have been 'terrifying but compelling'. Breathe and Unknown Caller are two of the new tracks that are proving particular stand-outs.

'The songs for me always had great potential live, they came from a very organic place,' he said. 'You could play them on a gazoo and they'd still work.'

Yesterday the band announced they would contribute five million euros to The Music Education Scheme which will provide music teachers for school age children.

Edge said he'd been lucky enough to go to a school where music was important and that the band felt 'incredibly privileged' to support the new scheme. U2 formed as a band in front of a live audience and a U2 show is about creating that connection, that communal feeling with the audience. 'We definitely wanted to do something in Ireland that was about music.'
