I know it wasn't released as a single, but I listened to this song at least 20-30 times a day, every day for six months as a result of unrequited love back in 1993. Thank you, U2.

This single came out in December '91. I was sailing from Greece to Israel in time for Christmas in Jerusalem and Bethlehem when I first heard it on a little pocket radio. I had
travelled through France and Italy on my first trip abroad as a 21 year old. This trip and the ones that followed it are still changing my life and the song sums up for me how, in many ways, a creative force guides us all in both extraordinary and ordinary ways. At least that is what it means to me.

So many great singles......I love Electrical storm, I dont know why it wasnt released with one of their albums, Beautiful Day, Mysterious Ways, just so many....but the only single I remember exactly where I was is Vertigo, riding in a Red Ford Escape on main st. in Smithtown NY at about 3pm. Just found out I had thyroid cancer.....had surgery, the day after my birthday, Nov 19....HTDAAB came out a few days later......got to know it very well over the next few months.....

I heard The Unforgettabe Fire LP for the first time around the time The Joshua Tree was released. As a pre teen it literally changed the direction of my life. It opened up the doors of my music world to bands like Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Morrissey, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, My Bloody Valentine etc. The actual song 'The Unforgettable Fire' made me decide to pick up a guitar. It was however 'Stay' (Far Away So Close) years later that made me decide to never put it down!

This is the single I got to know U2 with. It´s always the same strong feeling, when I hear it now again. Since than I followed every Single, LP/CD, Concert etc. But shurly there are so many songs, which are beautiful and should listed here, if their was singles or nor. I hope, the ideas for new songs will never end! Looking forward to hear something new...in some time!

The day it was released I was on a bus going from Naas to Dublin. The bus was crowded and sticky so the driver put the radio on and the first song was The fly. Unbelievable how the atmosphere on that bus changed and everyone was rocking all along! Everytime I hear that song I`m on that bus again.

This single played at my first highschool dance. 2 girls were having an argument over a boy and one ended up in the bathroom crying out his name and cursing the other girl it was as if the song was playing out. It was a sad song sad song. At 14 years old I decided this was too too much drama over a dumb boy, it was time to say goodbye and head home! Funny though even in my adult years I have seen that same scenario play out , it's timeless and reminds me how some things change and others stay the same.

2. With or Without You. The first release after my wife and were married, sparking a relationship with the band that includes 20+ concerts.
3. Beautiful Day. The most inspirational U2 song ever written and the one all three of our children love.

Bad - 30 years later, still gets me through tuff stuff
At 51, their music is in my life, and continues to be . Thank you U2 for helping to define my memories, as we continue to grow into our golden years. And now my children, who's ipods have my entire library in them, are avid listeners also.

Because of 1 the brilliant Spanish eyes B side on the single one of the greatest B sides of all time, period, and because it makes me realize I have been reliving this part or time of my life in a loop. At the time of it's release i was out of being in a relationship and once again I find myself back alone again, still searching for the one who for-fills the empty part of my existence. The words and sentiments ring in my ear and my heart striking a cord and making me feel lifted as I search for the one, not to complete me but to free each other.

My story involves two singles, but one song. The studio version of “Where the Streets Have No Name” completely opened me up to U2. I didn’t know much U2; I had never really paid attention to them before. Listening to “Streets”, I was stunned—completely blown away by the intro. That was when words like “incredible” and “amazing” entered my vocabulary concerning music. This song ignited my interest in U2 and fueled the passion I have for their music. The second single—Please—came a few months later. I was listening to the live version of “Please” and wondering how they were going to end the song if Bono kept wailing and the chords kept playing—and then when the guitar of “Streets” started, I was again stunned. That beautiful transition between songs, along with the energy and passion of the live “Streets” track, let me discover what a fantastic live song it is. The intro got me once again. And a few months after that, when I saw U2 live, it did there too. I’ve found no matter how many times I hear this song, it never fails to amaze me.

Every song on that single was played in relation to my wedding (hapilly married now 10 yrs w/ 2 kids):

>Unchained Melody: Played in the background on the night I proposed at a local restaurant. (Had to work w/ the restaurant manger to get the U2 version playing in advance, admittedly.)
>Everlasting Love: The song my wife and I, along with our wedding party, was announced to at our wedding reception.

There have been three that will always be unforgetable.
1. One - I have always thought this song is a perfect representation of the band. They are One but not the same and they carry each other. U2 possess a certain unreakable bond and I have always loved them for that.
2. Discotech - lol to See the video and do the dance at the end is always fun. Also seeing the expression on my fave Larry's face cause you can tell he doesn't want to dance is always a memory I have.
3. Stuck in the middle - I have always been a big fan of Inxs and like so many others I was totally devasted when I heard the news of Michael's passing. I cried and still am sad if I listen to their music because he was unforgettable. His voice, charisma and massive sex appeal so when I heard this song and realized it was for him it always touches me. As a fan losing a great artist is hard but it pales in comparison to losing a friend. Bono took us on a journey into his mind and I/we got to share in his pain and anger over losing a friend. Sometimes I wonder if it would've been any different if he had that conversation with Michael. I/we are left to wonder.

"The Fly" was not the first thing I heard from U2, but it was the beginning of a new era, both for the band and for myself. I'd not say it is the perfect song from U2 or my favourite (there are many, too many;) but it has an energy, a strength so powerful that hasn't changed after all these years. Also, some of the lyrics (about the artists, the lies) have really fascinating and timeless themes.The reason, anyway, is quite simple (but intellectual and sophisticated as well, believe me!): THIS is ROCK 'N' ROLL :)

As for SINGLES the standouts for me have been; Out Of Control, New Year's Day, The Unforgettable Fire, Where The Streets Have No Name, With Or Without You, ISHFWILF, One Tree Hill, All I Want Is You, The Fly, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, Zooropa (not sure if it is a single), Stay (Faraway, So Close!), Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, Gone, Staring At The Sun, Walk On, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, City Of Blinding Lights, Original Of The Species, Window In The Skies, Magnificent and I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight. ABSOLUTE FAV: WINDOW IN THE SKIES due to the fact it featured an extended live version of KITE used as the closer on the Australian leg of the Vertigo tour.

Okay. Technically, "One Tree Hill" wasn't a single in the US, but within an hour of my purchase of Joshua Tree it was the song that solidified the U2 sound for me, and provided a soundtrack for an important and formative experience in my life.
I popped the cassette into my car stereo and headed north out of Santa Fe, New Mexico driving towards Bandolier or the Jemez Wilderness. I was rolling with the tracks that would become so familiar, as clouds gathered in the mountains a strong thunderstorm building. I don't know what made me pull over, maybe the lightning, maybe the wind driven rain, or maybe just the need to be quiet and listen, but I was wide awake and ready for the first ringing guitar notes, the slow build of the lyric, and finally the exhaltation of Bono's voice. Art met Nature. I was there.

Where to begin... to start: I discovered U2 in middle school (Joshua Tree). But, it was Rattle and Hum that changed the way I thought about music. Leave to an Irish band to teach me about the music of my own country. "Angel of Harlem" opened up a world of music to me: soul, R and B, and especially the blues. But "Angel of Harlem" seeped into my soul. That is when I discoverd the history of rock and roll and set me off down a road into music not only important to rock and roll, but for an appreciation of world music. I used to sing "Angel" at the top of my lungs while I commuted to college - it relieved my stress. It was therapy. Its funny I found this morning - I was listenting to satellite radio yesterday on a drive through Western New York and a channel played an entire live concert from 1982 (A BBC vault concert). I am still blown away by their cover of "Everlasting Love". "One" came into my life at a unique time and still makes me think about the meaning in the music. "All I Want is You" haunts me. Finally, "Hallelujah Here She Comes" absolutely floored me the first time I heard it on a single release I found in a local record store. All great music. Thanks for the music U2!

It was 1997, I was fifteen, and I'd just gotten into the Joshua Tree. (I was about 10 years behind, I know). I was really crushing hard on With or Without You, and when I saw the live video version from Rattle and Hum, I absolutely fell in love with this band. Over the years, the meaning of this song has changed many times for me. At fifteen, it was about a crush, but now, at 30, it might be about my marriage, and there have been countless incarnations in between. Every few years there'll be a day when I hear this song and everything just stops. And the thought occurs to me that I always thought I understood this song, but then I realize that I have NEVER understood this song - until that moment. And I'm swept away again.

New Years Day
I was a 13y.o. teen when I bought "Under a Blood Red Sky" album. In theses days, U2 was debuting in Brazil and was playing in all radio stations.. I can remember myself spending my afternoons listening to the album and reading all the details on the cover of the LP, inside, etc.
I can remember all teens trying to learn "Sunday Bloody Sunday" intro on the guitar or "New Years Day" riff on the keyboard...
Nowadays, I'm 40, playing guitar for a livin' in Rio de Janeiro and with a bunch of Edge's riffs on my pocket :)

11 August, 2012 How To Dismantle A 6 Year Old
I'm 14 years old now but the first time I heard a u2 song was back in 2004 right after How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb came out, my dad, who is a huge U2 fan, bought the album and the first time I heard "Vertigo", I fell in love with it like a boy falls in love with a girl, I remember listening to Vertigo through my dad's headphone and i would sit at the computer and move my head side to side as I listened to the song, it was truly fucking awesome, and soon after that i started listening to other U2 albums and I fell in love with those albums too, but not the way i fell in love with How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and "Vertigo", nothing will ever compare to that magical moment I had when I listened to my favorite U2 single "Vertigo" for the first time, my earliest memory and I will never forget it for as long as I live, U2 Forever!

My sister inlaw is from Burma, so this has special significance to me. And at the 360 at the Rosebowl was a touching moment for me, when everyone had the masks. And the volunteers from Amnesty International came out. Being there during the record setting broadcast, what a song, what a night.

I remember many first listens of U2 singles, but none have stuck with me like The Fly. I can remember exactly where I was when I heard it for the first time. The first listen left me with a mix of emotions from curiosity to surprise to excitement. If only I had known what I was about to hear when I listened to the entire Achtung Baby album. I loved all that U2 had done before it, but Achtung Baby proved to me what I thought I already knew...U2 were and still are one of the greatest rock bands this world has seen. Their legend will only grow stronger as time goes by.
