U2.com slipped into the studio a few days back where the band played us the new tracks and we were blown away. A kind of musical autobiography, the eleven new songs chart their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk to early 80s electronica and soul... and reveal how music changed everything. As Bono sings in the lead song, 'The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)' 'I woke up when the miracle occurred/ Heard a song that made some sense out of the world...'

Exploring themes of home and family, relationships and discovery, detailed liner notes fill out the picture with resonant stories, like one of the first gigs the teenage band got into.

'The 4 members of U2 went to see the Ramones playing in the state cinema in Dublin without thinking about how we were going to get in. we had no tickets and no money.. My best friend Guggi had a ticket and he snuck us through a side exit he pried open. The world stopped long enough for us to get on it. Even though we only saw half the show, it became one of the great nights of our life....'

Songs of Innocence was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. The album closes with 'The Troubles' featuring the distinctive vocals of Swedish indie singer-songwriter Lykke Li.

Here's the eleven tracks: The Miracle (of Joey Ramone), Every Breaking Wave, California (There Is No End To Love), Song For Someone, Iris (Hold Me Close), Volcano, Raised By Wolves, Cedarwood Road, Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles.

On October 13th the physical release of Songs of Innocence comes with a 24-page booklet. A deluxe, gatefold double album, contains an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: Lucifer's Hands, The Crystal Ballroom, The Troubles (Alternative version) and Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake)

The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of "The Crystal Ballroom".

One of their best...
I can't stop listening to Songs Of Innocence. It's one of their best pieces of work and it grows on me even more and more with each listen. To me there's not one weak song on the album and I can't wait to hear those songs live! Right now my favourites are "The Troubles", "Song for someone" and "Sleep like a Baby Tonight". Thanks Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry for once again showing me why you are THE band of my life!

A work of fine art..........every track is strong, from the instant wins (California, Miracle, Every Breaking Wave) to the growers that unravel something new on every listen. Congratulations on producing another masterpiece. Especially looking forward to signing Song for Someone with tens of thousands of others next year.

Thank U2
Thank you for an awesome album. Can't wait for Songs Of Experience now! Forget all the complainers out there crying about their privacy and not asking for an album to be put in their iTunes accounts. Talk about First World problems. If those whingers did 1% of what you guys do for the world it would be a miracle. Great work U2 and stand strong with your decision. You did nothing wrong. Thanks again. :)

Sublime
I am up to my 15th listen and I can't stop raving that this is the most superb album - Bono's voice is soaring above the most amazing sounds just raw U2 - I love you - I want you to tour the whole album not just a couple of songs it's a journey you are amazing musicians you stepped on my soul years ago and nothing has changed the imprint is permanent whoa woot!!!

A Vocal Tour de Force
This album should have simply been called, "Bono Vox" because these songs are definitely the "high" point of an already amazing musical journey. What has it been, "The Unforgettable Fire" since Bono has sung so comfortably in his highest register? I mean, "Volcano"... Are you kidding me? Amazing. "Every Breaking Wave"... Incredible. "Song for Someone" Breathtaking. "The Troubles"... a crooning dizziness wave. I'm blown away. I could go one and on. Every song has a vocal nugget where I ask myself, "Has he done that before??" It all sounds so fresh and new. And the critics are such hypocrites. If Coldplay or Arcade Fire made and album like this, they would be falling over themselves, not realizing that it's their sound they stole from U2 and U2 is stealing it back...

best in 20 yrs????
Love the boys but had much higher expectations. I like a couple tracks but the whole thing lacks.....that something......no 'hips' to borrow bono's word. Where's the depth? I won't stop being a fan or going to see them, but I'd listen to Pop over SOI. Achtung is my #1 of all time and I've always appreciated their diversity. They tried too hard on this one.

To the band who's been the soundtrack to
Was a long 5 years but as usual I am overwhelmed with joy and excitement by the quality of music. Each song is a well spun story, put to masterful music with a sound new and fresh. Love every track. Breaking Wave, and Song for Someone, and California are stoundouts. Iris made me cry, so touching. I thank you so much for the magic you make with your music. Cannot wait to see it live

Love it!
Excellent album guys. All the hard work shows. Catchy hooks like, " I have a will for survival" , and " I don't believe anymore..." have been swirling in my brain since the first listen... even woke up with it! Bono, you really don't need to keep proving you and your band has the ability, just relax now and have fun with it. We always will have a special place for you guys, your music is a special part of our lives.

Maturity and rock and roll revisited
After listening more than five or six times, it is a great job.Overproduced or overmixed in some tracks...but rock and roll and the eighties spirit remembers my twenties.Bravo from Madrid!!

Also
I would like to add i love that Lykke Li is on it :-) Posted here before, and the album is getting better and better everytime i listen to it, wish i had the lyrics, if they are in the booklet pdf, it's not showing anything on my pc, but ohw well, i'll find them, wish it was October 13 already! And another thing, if the rumour is true about having more albums ready or close to it, do it this time, don't make it an empty promise like you did with No Line ..., that album was great too, but after two years i gave up hope of a promised follow up, thanks for listening. And also for a next time, don't work with Apple ever again. I love your music U2

Worth the wait
When Bono was on Letterman a year or two ago talking about the long delay he said something to the effect that if you want a good U2 album there are already plenty of those laying around. They weren't going for good, they were going for great. All I could do was trust Bono on his word. Well, U2 didn't disappoint. This is great and it was worth the wait. Well done.

Takes me back.....
The first time i could put the name U2 with the songs i was listening to was in the early nineties when achtung baby came out. Then of course i realized i had been listening to U2 for a long time. This new album takes me back. Its like i get to rediscover the band i have loved so much since then. Over 20 years of U2 (for me) and it never gets old. I dont know how but you guys always seem to top yourselves. There is no other band in the world that comes close!!! Love the new songs. Dont know how you make songs that always seem to speak directly to me, but dont stop.

Powerful
Waoww !! the magic is still here. It's been 30 years since I discovered U2 at a concert in Marseille. It was in 1984, the 19th of october, and that night I had such an emotional shock ! Today, your music keeps on touching my soul as ever ("Iris" is pure beauty). I just can't wait until seeing you on stage. There is no end to love. Carole
