U2.com slipped into the studio a few days back where the band played us the new tracks and we were blown away. A kind of musical autobiography, the eleven new songs chart their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk to early 80s electronica and soul... and reveal how music changed everything. As Bono sings in the lead song, 'The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)' 'I woke up when the miracle occurred/ Heard a song that made some sense out of the world...'

Exploring themes of home and family, relationships and discovery, detailed liner notes fill out the picture with resonant stories, like one of the first gigs the teenage band got into.

'The 4 members of U2 went to see the Ramones playing in the state cinema in Dublin without thinking about how we were going to get in. we had no tickets and no money.. My best friend Guggi had a ticket and he snuck us through a side exit he pried open. The world stopped long enough for us to get on it. Even though we only saw half the show, it became one of the great nights of our life....'

Songs of Innocence was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. The album closes with 'The Troubles' featuring the distinctive vocals of Swedish indie singer-songwriter Lykke Li.

Here's the eleven tracks: The Miracle (of Joey Ramone), Every Breaking Wave, California (There Is No End To Love), Song For Someone, Iris (Hold Me Close), Volcano, Raised By Wolves, Cedarwood Road, Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles.

On October 13th the physical release of Songs of Innocence comes with a 24-page booklet. A deluxe, gatefold double album, contains an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: Lucifer's Hands, The Crystal Ballroom, The Troubles (Alternative version) and Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake)

The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of "The Crystal Ballroom".

A fresh explosion of sound
This album is so good that I hope they play all the new songs in their live show, some perhaps twice like they did a few times with Vertigo.

ONE. BAD. SONG!!!! U2 strike back. Again. There are no words to say how great you are. You are the History of music, definitely.

U got it! What a thrill!
Dear U2, it has been a long wait (5 years) but if this is the result, please take your time on the next album! It took me a few listening turns, but yesterday, listening with my headphones while cleaning the house it hit me. This is such a consistent, warm and love filled U2 album. With only pearls and diamonds! And clearly a real team effort, with all 4 of U guys shining like never before! For sure this is your best album in over 20 years!! And what a way to release such beauty, almost casually appearing in my itunes library like it was always there. Can't wait to get my hands on the hard copy in October and will be ready to get my hands on tickets for multiple shows in 2015! I have to hear these songs live! So see U soon! Thank U2!!!!

simply... GREAT!
I wanted to write a structured analytical comment to reply to some critics I read on a few on line magazines.... then I thought it's pointless because journalists time to time makes me think politicians: they have to justify their salary... so let's put it this way on Songs of Innocence: just listen to it, dance with it, sing it... that's what music is all about... well done guys, it's simply GREAT!!! The long wating fully repaid, by far... the album is in my top five... Thank you.

Just absolutely awesome; the lyrics and the bass playing of Adam are incredible. A beautiful collection of songs with each one telling a story. Cannot wait for the tour.

Pure Triumph!
I cannot put to words how much joy and triumph these 11 songs are giving me. I just completed my 14th complete listen through and about to do my 15th. The joy I feel. The Miracle has brought me back to 1988 when I was 10 years old and I heard the most beautiful sound I ever heard and I was watching a summer movie rental my dad picked up for me and a trailer for rattle and him came on. All I remember was red and black silhouettes of a band with this ocean of a stadium crowd with this beautiful guitar sounds of heaven ringing and this bass to your heartbeat. This album is truly a rebirth and triumph. I'm listening to these new songs on my iPod and October and War in my car on the way to work. What a beautiful start to my favorite season of the year and October being my favorite month. I cannot wait to buy this album on October 13th and buy like 10 more copies as gifts to others. If I have enough money It may be in fact my Christmas card to many people I know! Thank you so much Apple and thank you U2 for surprising us. I really needed this rebirth and surprise and this joyous Triumph and I know the entire world needs it. In fact I can feel how much better of a world this world is since October 9th's Miracle took place!

Ho HUMmmmmmm! Are you kidding me?
The miracle, Iris, and the troubles are the only songs that don't boar me to death. I am a fourty something that grew up on and Loves U2. They are my favorite band of all time. BUT.... This album is by far the worst dribble ever. I expected much more. Especially after a 5 year wait. I fell jilted. My wife dies in June and now U2 is dead. "My mouth waters to be feed"

I know four Irish boys that are as much me as I am them. I also know their hearts because we beat as one. One because only singularity is as plural as ONES hearts can feel. John

Thanks Apple and U2
What a great surprise but seriously wasn't expecting such an amazing album. Thanks to a great company (Apple haters: keep enjoying viruses and malware on your PC's) and to the best band in the world.

Joy! =)
Sometimes people are very hard to please. I'm oftten told by former U2 fans that they prefere their albuns until 'The Joshua Tree". Other ones say that they did not provide a decente álbum at the last decade. Others say that they are not Rock and Roll. Well, fuck it! They are the most successfull band after the Beatles and Rolling Stones. And they are still creative after all. THINK! They did the greatest tour of all time (360). They sold more than 145 million records worldwide. After all this success, what is the turn-on reason that keeps them inside a band? Themselves. Songs of Innocence is a simple, raw and visceral álbum. It's the joy about being on the road. Chorus and Chorus. Arenas! Simple. =)

LOVE "Songs of Innocence"
We love this album! My 12 y o son was looking up the meanings of the songs we were listening to (in the Rolling Stone review). It was the sweetest homeschool assignment ever! Thank you, from two generations of U2 fans!

Again and again and again. . .
I keep listening! And while I posted yesterday, I have to post again: this album is MAGNIFICENT. It's so personal and because it's U2, it's so universal. No wasted notes; clear, passionate voices; beats that make you drum in the air and play air bass at the same time. Magic. Thank you thank you thank you. It was worth the wait.

Best thing about the apple event :)
This album is great. It reminds me of my uni daze.. going to see bands at the refectory and loving life. The production and sound is so great. Love a bit of scrappy bass and raw drum. Excellent.

Amazing
Great record guys!!! Thanks also for engaging in the "Free" music debate....its a knife edge walk.....but, good move.

Brilliant
This seriously is the best stuff for 20 years chaps ! the song construction is like the beginning, and the use of instruments is clever and relevant for now ! I have always love your music from that first album and the early 80's outrageous stuff ! brave using Apple for release, but modern music is not the same, go for a stadium tour and earn way more than a digital release , love this album so much more that a lot of the recent past , well done and keep going !!!
akaknitsua
a STUNNING MASTERPIECE!!!
I CANNOT stop listening! All the songs are fantastic. Songs of Innocence joins Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree as my favorite all time albums!

Already?? The best cover version of The
Check out this French dude (Hugo Silver) doing a cover of U2's new single on piano, You-Tubed live from Paris. This is incredible, and he only had 24 hours to learn the tune, and turn it into this. Bravo Hugo! Brilliant, and Classy. It looks like a scene from 50 years into the future, playing an old tune. Love it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJg3VnHwOT8
